I still don’t know if I have the magic formula, so I was happy when Pete Van Bloem turned me on to this article about how to manage employees to get the best results.
Here’s the main takeaway:

Classic Expect versus Inspect. Teach them to fish rather than feed them for a day.

Here’s mine, written as a worker’s manifesto:
- I want to come to the conclusion on my own rather than being told what to do.
- At the same time, I don’t want to guess at what you want.
- I want the freedom to make my own decisions. I want to have ownership over my job and responsibilities.
- You are my best example of how to act.
- Show me you value my opinion by including me in the solution.
